Racism Discussion (from 3/06/07)

Please post comments about the class discussion we had on Beverly Tatum's article "Defining Racism" and what you thought of our class discussion. Also, how do you think this will be RELEVANT to reading Huck Finn?

I think a lot of people get worked up a lot of times over race, thinking that people are leaving them out because of there race. In a lot of situations this might not be true, but it is the case a lot of times. Your shouldn't just number out someone because of their race of color. A lot of people number out people with disabilities. The class discussion we had I think was good. It was interesting to see everyone's different point of views on the situation. Race isn't the only problem. In Huckleberry Fin I think we will see racism a lot throughout the book. The white people will probably think they slaves should always work for them and come to there every need. I think maybe they will later maybe see that blacks are the same as whites.

I really liked the discussion we had about racism. People had some very good points to add. It is interesting to hear other thoughs and point of views. I felt like i took a lot out of the conversation. I have never read Huck Finn before so i do not know how our conversation will relate to the book. I am sure the book has something to do with racism though. It might be about white land and slave owners abusing their slaves. Over all I really liked the discussion and think we need to do it more often.

I really enjoyed the topic alot. I have to agree with Morgan alot of people do get worked up over racism. One excuse that really pisses me off is when black people say "It's because I'm Black." My response to that is maybe it's because you're not qualified. Though there are those who are racist lets not blame every misfortune on race. In my mind I think that we could all benefit from each other.Maybe learn each other's ways and cultures. But this senseless idiotic behavior will only keep us back and all of Dr.King's fighting will be for nothing. It's kind of like returning to the 50s and 60s. Once again I say we have to stop this senseless behavior if we desire to move forward in making the American Dream a reality. Thank You.

I think it was an interesting topic to talk about and discuss the issues of racism in our modern society, I think we clear up what racism really is. We shared different points of view that in some cases were not common, so there for there were disagreements. I think racism is an issue that will still continue, but thanks to the discussion we understood more about this theme. I think this discussion is an opening to Hunk Finn’s reading, to be more open minded and comfortable when we talk about racism.

I think that racism is really stupid(sorry for the word). But it seems like people started this because of fear. What is there to be afraid of? Where all humans here. It relates to Huck Finn because the book was set during pre-anti slavery. So there is probably a lot of races thing in the book.

i think we have given rascim to much power. rascim has such a hold on the way we think tha we dont even realize it. the discussion in class was very intresting. i think everyone one had something really good to say. i think in ''huck fin'' we will see just how much power we have given racsim and how greatly it effected us then and why we still suffer from it today

i got a lot from the discussion we had. i believe that when people are offended, in some cases, they try to blame it on their race. i do believe that we do put to much emphasis on racism in this country. Racism might relate to Huck Fin because it is set in a time of slavery. i think that people will always try to make the slaves work for them.

Even if racism is over, there are some racisms everywhere. Because Georgia was the one of the confederacy states, we (Georgia) have more than the other states. Especially, we can find the examples of racisms in the school. One of the students in PRHS hate people who are not white. He always annoys the people, he never do group work with the other people. (black, asian, hispanic) Anyway, racism should be over and over!

I think people had very good points in the conversation. It is true that racism occurs in every state of the U.S. Many people dont like it when they tell you something just because you are not from the same race as them. Some of them may end up doing something to the person who is being racist against them. I think that racism is something that will continue as time goes by and i really dont think it is going to end.

I thought our class discussion was very imfomative and compelling. It is refreshing and scary to hear other peoples' views on racism. I think that racism is wrong, but as long as we look different their will always be racism. I have even found myself being racist and not even realising it. I think it was a very good idea to have a class discussion and to know the opinions of others. In Huck Finn racism will be a major issue and I think the main character will realize the truth about it.

I really enjoyed our class discussion on rasism. I thought it was really interesting to listen to everyones thoughts and views on such a sensitive subject. I believe that by first talking about a sensitive subjust like racism is a great way to become more knowledgeable about the subect and it also helps you to be more open and understanding of other peoples opinons. I havn't read Huckleberry Fin yet but i expect this novel to have an excessive amount of racial comments. Over all i think the book will be a good learning experience and a good way to become more in touch with the past.

I think racism in the world will never come to an end. You'll always have someone out there not liking someonelse b/c of the color of there skin. But hopefully it wont overcome people, and make an impact on the desicions they make in life and situations. Also by how the young generation percieves racisims, and other rasist which will make an effect later on down the road in our lives. In Huckle Berry Finn it is wrote from a writer that has a little bit of racisim in him. So he tries to express himself on maybe some of his experiences he has had in his life.

I really liked this discussion about racism. i think its a taboo in our society to talk about racism. and personally i was afraid of offending someone. i thought that nick brought up a good point about the word some can say and others cant. i had always wondered that but was i afraid to ask. the discussion is relevant to Huck Finn because racism is a large part of the book.

It is always interesting to hear how other people view a certain issue; therefore, i found that the discussion went well. Racism is an idea meaning that it will always be prevalent in the world through the minds of ignorant people. As a response to another student's comment who said that Black people use their race as an excuse for their own misfortune: you can never fully understand the hardships of a specific race because you are not that race. As for the use of the 'n' word: Basically, now to some Black people, the word is used as a form of acceptance and a way to embrace a fellow brother. But it still does not serve as an excuse to the word being used so nonchalantly in today's society. The word itself contradicts what civil rights leaders fought for. Huckleberry Finn is set during a time in America's history where slavery was the norm. Twain does an excellent job of interpreting the world through the eyes of an innocent young boy, but unfortunately, because Twain is not African American, he cannnot accurately portray the Black character.

umm recism is a neverending conflict that as much as we would like to change it, it will never end. Its just like world peace we all would like it but as much conflicts and ideas and beliefs are in the world you will always have some sort of argument. Were all diffrent as an individual but were all part of the world. Noones better than any other.

um racism is messed up and we will alwyas have it . nothing will change someone will always have something to saty. just like world peace we would like to have it but it will never happen. our discusion in class was good and i enjoyed it, it gave everyone a chance to say what they really thought. In huckleberry finn im sure its a big part of the book and i cant wait to read and find out how this bppk will turn out!
