Write about a time that you have acted as an ally for someone whose voice was SILENCED because of his/her position or status in life. When have you stood up for someone, going against the "norm" or what you learned was right to do? Tell a specific story here, and also be willing to respond to others' stories. If we all begin to act more like allies, then everyone will have the power to use his/her voice one day.
OR
Write about what "groups" in our society today need allies to help speak up for their rights. Why have these groups struggled to stand up for themselves? Why is it our responsibility to stand up for those who have not been given the same equal opportunities?

I have often stood up for many of my friends when they could not stand up for themselves. An example that stands out in my memory. When I was in 7th grade I had a friend, he was short and kind of timid. One day I saw him by the water fountain and some kids were picking on him. I was something of a bully in middle school so I made them leave him alone.
